NYC’s infamous club kids go mainstream in the most mainstream venue ever.
The notion of two brands teaming up to create something that reaches both of their demographics seems to become more and more popular by the minute. From high end designers sketching out duds to be sold at mass retailers, to swank furniture labels creating diffusion lines in conjunction with a more moderately priced label, everyone everywhere is teaming up to create a buzz. And it works. While the contrast of two brands can make for interesting product, the pairing of two that are on the same wave length can be just as interesting. This spring, fresh from their stint with artist Fafi, MAC introduces the limited edition collection created by club kids, Heatherette. Known separately as Richie Rich and Traver Rains, the duo has paired with the cosmetics giant to create a collection of makeup as colorful and flamboyant as the brand itself.
Since its birth in 1999, Heatherette has taken the fashion world by storm by throwing a lot of glitter and glam on neon and calling it a day. Their shows are a mix of downtown kids, high profile celebrities, and tons of hanger-ons, all who share an affinity for all things party people. Previous fashion shows have included Paris Hilton, Kimora Lee Simmons, and drag queens galore, so it’s no wonder the duo would create a hellishly bright scene with their palettes.
In conjunction with spring’s strong trend of acid brights, the Heatherette for MAC collection is the second collaboration between the labels. Bright eye shadows and shimmering colors reminiscent of a raver fairy round out the limited edition makeup collection. Mad about color? Or more of a subtle girl? There’s something for everyone, and best of all, it’s wrapped in neon pink.
Eyeshadows can be applied wet or dry, depending on the intensity desired. Two eye shadow palettes were created. Heatherette Trio 1 has a soft pink and jet black that can be used regularly, and a bright teal that can be worn when the lights go down. Trio II is perfect for the girlie girl with two shades of pink and a royal purple.
With two blushes, Alpa Girl seems to be the standout shade due to its sheer brightness that works well on nearly any skin tone.
Adding to MAC’s incomparable nail polishes are Lola Devine, a creamy coral, and $$$$$ Yes, a liquid silver that mimics foil when applied to the nail.
The two MAC Pigments in the collection are loaded with shimmer and glitter. Jardin Aires is a soft golden peach, while Pink Pearl is a light magenta.
MAC Lipglass is a cult item in and of itself, and Heatherette created four new limited edition colors, most of which sold out within the first week. All four Lipglass colors coincide with the four lipsticks created for the collection. Mix and match colors and textures like a fresh nude, clear pink, and sheer fuschia.
Dual Edge Eye Pencil has two ends: one for day, one for night. A glitter pencil highlights the companion color that is at the other end of the pencil for added impact. If a glitter liner isn’t enough, look to MAC Glitter, which are pots of, well, just that. The chunky particles adhere to the skin and hair with ease, to create an instant party look. Faux lashes can be of the good girl or bad girl variety. She’s Bad Lash is a surefire way to make your eyes pop sans anything else. The dense lashes have a fishnet effect that is pure drama, even with an otherwise bare face.
Heatherette for MAC packaging qualifies for MAC’s recycling program, so be sure to use your items and hold on to the plastic tubes and pots for a free lipstick. Stay tuned for news on MAC’s next limited edition color launch, slated to drop in late May, tentatively dubbed “Naughty Nauticals.” Sounds promising!
